Vladimir Tretchikoff was one of the most commercially successful artists of all time - his painting Chinese Girl is one of the best selling art prints ever. Tretchikoff, born in Russia, was a self-taught artist who painted realistic figures, portraits, still life and animals, with subjects often inspired by his early life in China and Malaysia, and later life in South Africa. He became famous in South Africa soon after his move to the country in 1946, were he was reunited with his wife and daughter Mimi, from whom he had been involuntarily separated during the Second World War. He died on 26 August 2006 in Cape Town.
