Other Achievements
AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER | 2011
He has built up a reputation as an exceptional photographer even though this is not a mainstream function for him. For instance, in 1972 he was a World Diploma Winner in the Agfa International Photo Competition in Germany, and in 2005, he became the South African winner of the Convergence Photographic Competition and, in the same year, he was the World Grand Prizewinner in a major international photographic competition, the MENSA International Photo Cup in Serbia. His photographic work has been the subject of articles in leading photographic magazines including Pix and Camera & Image, while in 2008 he was the South African Grand Prizewinner in the SSI South African Institution of Civil Engineering photographic competition with a picture of the floodlit World Soccer Stadium.
PROMINENT LOBBYIST. | 2010
He has lobbied on important public issues including, recently, campaigning against the meat levy and unconstitutional tax issues. An example of such successful lobbying was, when in 1977, at the instigation of the Editor-in-Chief of Reader's Digest, he wrote a powerful article advocating a law to make seat belt wearing compulsory. This quiet but powerful diplomacy is estimated to have saved an estimated 26 000 lives and prevented more than 280 000 from being maimed.
DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER. | 2011
He has been the keynote speaker at numerous conferences in SA and abroad, including addressing MENSA at Cambridge University.
PRODUCT INNOVATOR AND PUBLICIST. | 2011
He has created more commemorative medallions than any other person in South Africa, both in terms of design and historical research, including important series such as Governors of the Cape, The Cape Triangular, Kings and Queens of England, Wreck of the Birkenhead, and Tretchikoff's monumental Ten Commandments, working closely with the artist over this.
NOTED DESIGNER. | 2011
He is a designer of note, having won Best Design in SA for a corporate magazine, Connoisseur, is permanently ranked in the top three in the world in mind map design and also designed Queen Mother's Eightieth Birthday Medallion.
EXPERT MENTOR. | 2011
He has a noted penchant for managing and mentoring creative staff through a powerful transformational dynamic of quiet example, high skills, personal diplomacy and encouragement (as opposed to the demand-driven business school management style) a technique he asserts evokes optimum creativity, trust and productivity."People should obtain references from the staff they directed rather than the managers for whom they worked, especially as such executives often lack creative and human relationship skills," he maintains. "If you cannot do the jobs of the people who work for you, and do it with grace, then you cannot become an inspired leader." He has also campaigned against the widespread abuse in business of talented people by jealous colleagues, a phenomenon known as the gifted stigma. Philip has been a college tutor and part-time lecturer to undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as an external university examiner.
PLAIN LANGUAGE EXPONENT. | 2011
He is a vigorous exponent of plain language writing and has practised it for nearly 40 years, with the ability to transform abstruse text on almost any subject - including medicine and law - into understandable and, where necessary, persuasive text.
GENEALOGICAL RESEARCHER. | 2011
He is a contributor to several ongoing international research projects studying his family's ancestry which have documented his direct descent, inter alia, from Edward I, II and III, Henry III, William the Conqueror and Charlemagne. In 2003 he was awarded a Roll of Honour Certificate by the Society of America's First Families for his research work. He is, inter alia, a descendant of a famous Virginia First Family, the Burwells.
PULITZER-COLLABORATOR. | 1979
He collaborated as a researcher and guide with Pulitzer-prizewinning author James Michener between 1979 and 1981 on 'The Covenant' which became the top-selling book in the world for two years. In doing this, he built up an informal faculty of about 70 distinguished academic and other consultants to advise on specialist details. The complex creation process for this ground-breaking book, which encompassed numerous academic disciplines, was included in a PhD dissertation by Prof Barbara Helly at the University of Rennes (France) in 2001. Michener held Bateman in high esteem, describing him as "brilliant" and as his "guide, guru and gustatory genius."
INTERNATIONAL GRANDMASTER. | 2002
He became a Mind Sports Olympiad Creative Thinking International Grandmaster in the UK in 2002 - one of a handful in the world. His award was presented to him at the University of Loughborough by Mary Lady Tovey.of the Mind Sports Olympiad.
FELLOW OF EXTREME GENIUS SOCIETY. | 2001
In addition to being a Permanent Member of MENSA, the high-IQ society, in 2001 he was promoted to Senior Research Fellow of a premier learned society, the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry (ISPE), one of about 30 members at this level internationally, and the first South African to have achieved this. Attainment was based on his intellectual and creative contribution to society, and in addition, was only open to those with tested IQs above the 99.9th percentile - i.e. 20 times rarer than the MENSA level and over 172 on the Cattell scales. An indication of the magnitude of this level is evidenced by a 1965 IQ study of 148 distinguished science faculty members at Cambridge University, where none of the subjects reached this extreme IQ level. His level was confirmed by a leading Harley Street, London, psychologist. He is one of the few people in the world entitled to use the post-nominal letters, RFSPE.
DISTINGUISHED WRITING AND RESEARCH CAREER. | 2011
He is noted for his distinguished career in editorial research, writing, authorship, design and editing, with numerous articles, columns and books behind his name. His books include Pioneers of southern Africa and Generals of the Anglo-Boer War. He has built up an international reputation for in-depth editorial research and some annotated examples of his work for The Reader's Digest show he has consulted as many as 700 sources for a single article - almost certainly more than anyone else in the world.
DIRECT MARKETING EXPERT | 2011
As the writer and designer of some 3000 successful direct mail pieces, advertisements and other published items including booklets, he has been described as the most gifted and experienced hands-on direct marketing creative director in the world. His hard-selling retail advertisements produced queues extending across several blocks and starting at 5 am. A direct response brochure for a major retailer was an astonishing 24 times more effective than their prevailing winner.
TOP WORLD AWARD-WINNER. | 2011
He has won at least 40 local and international awards, or reached top international status, in numerous creative fields including editorial writing, creative writing, photography, design, public relations and creativity, about ten times at the highest level in world.
MULTIPLE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS | 2011
He won World Championship and Gold Medal in Creative Thinking 2011-12, 2009-10, 2002-3 and in 1997-8 (first in world) in Mind Sports Olympiads, described as the "Olympic Games for the Mind." In addition to these supreme achievements, he won three silver medals (second in world) and three bronze medals or awards (third in world). The media described him as "SA's Mr Brainwave", "Genius", "Mastermind: SA's Head Honcho" and the "most creative man in the world." Although his victories provided credit for South Africa on the international Olympiad score charts, he has not yet evoked sponsorship for these extraordinary ongoing achievements.

Testimonials
Brian MacDonald, CEO, Global Conferences
"This is to confirm that I have known and worked with Philip Bateman for over 20 years
Philip produced comprehensive direct mail packages for my conference organising company, Global Conferences. His strategic input, creative skills, attention to detail, general knowledge, reliability and integrity resulted in a wonderful relationship developing, so much so that I tried to convince him to join our company
As a result of this experience I invited Philip to speak at a number of conferences and symposiums that we organised and on every occasion his presentations were right on brief, well researched, with excellent support material and notes, presented with confidence and flair, resulting in top class ratings from delegates
I would have no hesitation in recommending Philip as a professional, entertaining and outstanding speaker and the range of topics he could confidently talk on would be extensive." - 2011
Vaughan Pankhurst, CEO Dynamic Direct, a direct marketing agency
"I have had the pleasure of working with Philip over a period of several years – specifically in the field of Direct Marketing.
Philip has a profound and in-depth knowledge of Direct Marketing, of the requirements needed to extract the best possible responses from this advertising and communication medium, and he understands the importance of achieving measureable results.
His ability to produce remarkable and often unprecedented sales is a consequence of a combination of several factors. He has extensively researched the psychology of persuasion and selling, has a deep insight into design knowledge, copywriting skills and an understanding of the human condition, required for achieving results as opposed to winning awards.
Very importantly, Philip is extremely pleasant to work with as he has the ability to relate and communicate with people across a very large spectrum of society, is enthusiastic about new projects and always willing to put in whatever effort is required to implement these projects to the best of his ability. As a businessman Philip also understands the importance of speed and accuracy of work production.
It’s somewhat difficult to comment effectively on Philips intelligence – as these facts really do speak for themselves. He has won countless international awards for the art of creative thinking, is a lifetime member of Mensa and most recently returned from London having won the title of World Champion of Creative Thinking!
I have no hesitation in recommending Philip to anyone wanting a Direct Marketing campaign that needs to be produced fast, efficiently – within budget and that is results-oriented. " - 2011
Vaughan Pankhurst, CEO, Dynamic Direct
"Yet again I am completely dumbfounded at your amazing ability to assess the needs of our communication and to execute it so brilliantly. It’s astounding. " - 2011
Tony Corfe. Event Manager, Mind Sports Olympiad, UK.
"Philip has an amazing capacity to think out of the box and he really enjoys what he does." - 2011
Former employee.
"I just feel compelled to write to you this morning. I would just like to take the opportunity to thank you. You are a wonderful mentor and I have learned very valuable lessons from you in the past year. I think everyone in the studio will agree that you bring a wonderful presence into the studio and we are all privileged to have been able to access your fortress of knowledge.
I, for one really enjoy your input in the studio, your unique sense of humour and your assessment of individuals. You make the copy side so creative and make writing copy seem effortless! Obviously you are a master in this area and I have lots of respect for you. The studio is indeed such a pleasant environment to work in and the people you selected are all talented, vibrant and comfortable working colleagues. " - 2011
Former employee.
"It has been such a privilege working with you and thank you for always being such a kind, supportive and wonderful teacher. Ad Talent told me that you were an exceptional creative director (and person) and looking back I am so glad that you hired me. I’ve really had a wonderful opportunity to learn from the very best.THANK YOU!" - 2010
JC, Head of IMAC Advertising, former employee.
"It was you who supported and helped me to find my dream. Thank you! " - 2011
Barry Lloyd, founder and former CEO of the Heritage Collection, a major South African mail order company, Cape Town.
"Nothing is too difficult or challenging for Philip. He’s in love with the creative process. He can take an abstract concept - even a single idea or phrase - and return with a complete mailing – copy, art the lot - or even a website or a full-length book! This is unusual to say the least. He writes fluid copy ENTIRELY from the customer’s point of view which SELLS like mad. He’s into the ‘You’ and has minimal ego. Philip, uniquely, sees things as a whole, being equally adept at copy, layout, marketing and photography.
He understands the theory of direct mail backwards and is the only copywriter I know who has scoured psychological literature to find out the essential “why”. Philip’s an astute bloodhound who revels in in-depth research that gives copy and editorial huge believability and substance. He loves proving the facts with references and sources.
He a master at writing motivational plain language that not only sells but which can still be understood by anyone. Philip’s always affable, professional, helpful and insightful – warm and charming to everyone - and an utter pleasure to work with. " - 2011
