Former Premier of Gauteng. He was a member of the National Executive Committe of ANC. A former member of SACP, he arrived in Johannesburg in 1979; joined trade union movement in 1981. He played a key role in NEDLAC, engaging extensively with governmentt and business in determining strategies & practical options for developing SA. He also played an integral part of the Mass Democratic Movement. he left the ANC in 2008, to form Congress of the People (COPE) with Mosiuoa Lekota. At the 2009 general elections, he was voted to represent COPE at parliament.
