Bertie Reed was a South African sailor. He and John Martin were competed against each other in a single handed around the world race when John's boat hit an iceberg in the deep Southern Ocean and he was marooned many miles from land. Bertie gave up his position in the race and was nominated to the Single-Handed Sailor's Hall of Fame in the Museum of Yachting at Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A. He has sailed a calculated 170 000 sea miles competitively, over 100 000 miles of which were singlehanded. This feat has earned him a special honoured place among the elite of blue-water sailors around the world. He was the first South African to single-handedly complete three circumnavigations of the globe in 1991.
