Grew up in Alexandra Township, the breeding-ground of generations of singers, composers and musicians.; His musical career started while still a teenager, singing in church choirs and leading a traditional choir which performed at township weddings and other celebrations.; In the late 50's he became involved in the music industry through his brother Zeph and began to build a reputation as a vocalist as well as a unique stage personality.; In 1964 his career took a major step forward when he began recording songs with a group of studio musicians who would later become known as Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens, South Africa's first super-group.;
