Chris Barnard was a South African cardiac surgeon, renowned for performing the world's first successful human-to-human heart transplant, in Cape Town on 3 December 1967. He was a pioneer of cardiopulmonary bypass (open-heart) surgery and amongst his awards are seventy-one fellowships, honorary degrees, awards and decorations from several countries.
