In 1955 he becomes the first white member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC

During the Second World War he volunteers to fight

In 1963 he went into exile and lived in Britain, Angola, Mozambique and Zambia and returned to South Africa in 1990

In 1954 he listed under the Suppression of Communism Act as a communist and banned from political activity

In 1955 he helps draft the 'Freedom Charter'
