In 1960 Adelaide and Oliver Tambo left South Africa to help the ANC abroad. They were based in London till the unbanning of all political parties in South Africa

She worked with the International Defence and Aid Fund to identify and financially assist families whose children left South Africa after the 1976 uprising.

She was one of the first democratically elected members of parliament in 1994 and served as a member of parliament from 1994-1999.

She was a prominent anti-apartheid activist and was regarded as a heroine of the liberation struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

She received The Order of the Baobab in Gold. Awarded by President Thabo Mbeki for exceptional commitment to the struggles against apartheid and dedication to community building. This award is one of the highest honours bestowed by the post 1994 gove
