He spent 18 years imprisoned on Robben Island and Pollsmoor Prison (1964-1989)

In 1956 Kthrada was arrested in the Treason Trial along with 30 accused. They were acquitted in 1961

In 1992 he was awarded the Isitwalandwe Medal, the ANC's highest honor which has been bestowed on only a handful of people.

He was formerly a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee.

His partner is MP Barbara Hogan.

He has authored 2 books - Memoirs and Letters from Robben Island
