Breyten Breytenbach

South African writer and painter


Born 16-09-1939 in Bonnievale South Africa

Breyten Breytenbach is a South African writer and painter. His work includes numerous volumes of poetry, novels, and essays,in both English and Afrikaans. Breytenbach left South Africa in 1960 and settled in Paris in 1962 with his Viëtnamese wife Yolande Ngo Thi Hoang Lien. He returned to South Africa with a false passport in 1975, was arrested charged under the Terrorism Act, and jailed for seven years. Upon his release he returned to France and obtained French citizenship.
