Albertina Sisulu

South African Anti-Apartheid Activist


Born 21-10-1918 in Transkei

Deceased 02-06-2011 in Johannesburg

Albertina Sisulu was a South African anti-apartheid activist and was married to fellow activist Walter Sisulu. She was known to many as "a mother of the nation". Albertina joined the ANC Women's League in the 1940s and became a member of the executive of the Federation of South African Women in 1954. On August 9, 1956, Albertina joined Helen Joseph and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn in a march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings of Pretoria in protest against the apartheid government's requirement that women carry passbooks as part of the pass laws.
