Duane moved to the Cape in 2009 and immediately slotted into the Vodacom Stormers loose trio. His physical play and barn-storming running style make him a formidable obstacle for any opponent. The loose forward had an especially strong Currie Cup campaign, leading many touting him for higher honours in the near future. Alongside Schalk Burger and Francois Louw, Vermeulen will be part of an impressive trio at the back of the scrum during the 2010 Super 14 season.
