Tender (Thandazile) Mavundla was born in Port Shepstone, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, but grew up in a little village called KwaNositha. She completed her primary schooling in Durban whilst staying with her aunt but went back home to Gamalakhe in 1996 to start grade 6. During her high school years she was actively involved in stage plays and at one point, was part of a gospel choir.
In 1997 she won SABC 1’s Jam Alley Megastar Competition and realised that she should pursue her singing career seriously. Tender moved to Johannesburg and sang backing vocals for various artists, worked as a waitress and had success in a Gospel Star Search where she made it top the Top 5.
In 2001 she was diagnosed with HIV and decided to move back to Port Shepstone where she until worked in Waltons Stationery.
When Idols arrived in Margate in June 2007, she jumped at the chance to enter . She made top 4 of the competition .
Tender is in great demand as a motivational speaker, is a diva in her own right, and in 2009 released a solo Afro-Pop/Afro Soul album entitled 'Tender Moments'.
Tender has appeared in many documentary's were she speaks about her life as a Musician and on the stigma that is attached to HIV Positive people.
