Vaal Happening

Staff Member, 2012 - present

Vaal Happening is an inter-denominational Christian Ministry that hosts 2 (two) annual camps for youth (Youth Happening) and adults (Adult Happening) in the outskirts of Johannesburg CBD.

It has a large network of alumni who are devoted to the ministry and give their time selflessly to the work of God. I have the priviledge of being part of youth and adult Happening as a staff member at the camps and have witnessed God turn people's lives and destiny's around through the work of the ministry.

The ministry is founded on Christ's love and is sustained by it.

Youth Link (SA)

Executive Committee, 2002 - present

This is a South African Christian organisation that hosts annual camps for children from all walks of life and ages. It has a following of close to 150 children annually and an alumni network of over 500 people. We recently (December, 2011) camped in Botswana and have formed strong links with Youth across our borders. We will be partnering with other youth organisations and camping in the USA in June 2013, in an effort to learn from other cultures and to foster relationships with other youth organisations that share a common vision.

EPAHR

Member, 2007 - 2008

Realising the need for justice for all, every second week a group of University of Pretoria law students visited the Pretoria Central Maximum Prison to educate prisoners on human rights and constitutional rights. Occassionally, we would report back to the Department of Justice and the relevant authourities on cases of gross abuse of power by the prison authourities.

The Business Place

Legal Advisor, 2010 - 2010

As part of our articles, candidate attorneys from Webber Wentzel are required to do weekly visits to The Business Place. The Business Place is an initiative which is supported by Investec and Webber Wentzel.

We attended weekly (in different groups (on a rotational basis)) at the centre and gave free legal advice to upcoming business people. This service is offered to people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and would otherwise, have not been able to access quality legal and business advice which is offered for free at the Business Place.

Transform

Trustee, 2009 - present

Transform is made up of a group of young, likely minded individuals, who recognise the dire need for more social entrepreneurs our country. Through a shared vision and commitment, we have successfully established an outreach organisation, which is in the progress of NPO registration. We have previously been involved in outreach work in Delmas, Mpumalanga.

Our team consists of a committee of five (5) former University of Pretoria students, who work tirelessly to make sure that the work we set out to do continues. In the past we adopted a middle school (Manyazela Primary) and effected renovations to the school buildings. We also host an annual career day and seminars on HIV/AIDS and related matters. The invitation is sent out to all the High Schools in Botleng community. In 2010 and 2011 we hosted just over 300 children, who came to spend the day with us. We source funds from different intuitions and business people and also contribute financially as trustees and owners of the vision. As a result of the positive energy, the organisation is mutating and diversifying and we are seeing more regular activities coming to surface, this includes the recent seminar we hosted at the Constitutional Court on social outreach and community development, where the speaker for the event, was a celebrated member of society and a Judge of the Constitutional Court, Justice Edwin Cameron.

Why we do what we do? "It is love that compels us" - Mlungisi Mahlangu (Chairperson)
