Author paper at: ESRI 2001: ESRI’s 21st Users Conference. San Diego, USA | 2001

Title: "A GIS to trace Industrial Effluent - for Potable Water Resource Protection"

ESRI 2001: ESRI’s 21st Users Conference. San Diego, USA.July 2001

The major problem is to know which industries’ effluent will drain to a specific wastewater treatment works (WWTW). To be able to trace these high effluent values at specific WWTW’s to potential industries, there must be a relation between them. This connection has been done in ArcView by linking them to the Industries Database through linkages to the Effluent Database and Drainage Database as well as to the Laboratory Database. Potable water resource protection can be done better now.

Author paper at: NSIF & GISSA seminar: “GIS Applications in Local Government”. Pretoria, South Africa | 2002

Title: "Effectiveness Of Service Levels In Local Government Using GIS"

NSIF & GISSA seminar: “GIS Applications in Local Government”. Pretoria, South Africa.2002

Authors: Marna Swart, D.T. Nel (Pr Eng)

The census data is utilised to calculate an effectiveness index. This index pertains to the level of services installed. Various scenarios can be considered and the outputs used to produce maps highlighting service levels, predominant services, capital infrastructure requirements or areas requiring urgent attention.

Author paper at: SSAG ’99: Biennial International Conference of the Society of South African Geographers. Windhoek, Namibia | 1999

Title: "A GIS Solution For Industrial Problems In Catchments "

SSAG ’99: Biennial International Conference of the Society of South African Geographers. Windhoek, Namibia.July 1999

This GIS has been developed and it traces high values of certain variables at specific sample points, back to potential industries. Even when certain variables have a high trend at a sample point, the source can be found easily and therefore decisions can be made to launch proactive action. The controlling of pollution incidents can now be dealt with efficiently and the catchment can be managed in an effective manner.

Author paper at: EDIS ’99: Earth Data Information Systems Conference, co-hosted by SAPGIS & TAGIS. Pretoria, South Africa | 1999

Title: "A GIS Solution For Industrial Problems In Catchments "

EDIS ’99: Earth Data Information Systems Conference, co-hosted by SAPGIS (South African Photogrammetry and Geo-information Society) and TAGIS (Transvaal Association of Geographic Information Systems). Pretoria, South Africa.July 1999

Author paper at: SSAG ’97: Biennial International Conference of the Society of South African Geographers. Midrand, South Africa | 1997

Title: "The potential influence of septic tanks on the Cape Eastern and Southern coastal environment: The problem and solutions"

SSAG ’97: Biennial International Conference of the Society of South African Geographers. Midrand, South Africa.June 1997

It dealt with the extent of sewage disposal by septic tanks along the studied coast, by focusing on the potential problems, the solutions and the management guidelines for local authorities.

Author paper at: CoastGIS '95: International Symposium on GIS and Computer Mapping for Coastal Zone Management. Cork, Ireland | 1995

Title: "The identification of potential problem areas, caused by septic tanks, along the southern and south-eastern South African coast - a GIS approach "

CoastGIS '95: International Symposium on GIS and Computer Mapping for Coastal Zone Management, PROCEEDINGS, University College Cork, Ireland, February 3rd 5th, 1995. Session 5: GIS and Coastal Environments. p. 331 371. ISBN: 0646240919 February 1995

It dealt with the identified risk areas along the coast, where potential environmental pollution by septic tanks can occur. It has been shown on maps by using a GIS (PcArc/Info 3.4D).

Author paper at: Dunes '94: International Conference on the management of coastal dunes. Port Elizabeth, South Africa. | 1994

Title: "Sewage disposal into the coastal zone from septic tanks: Cape coast, South Africa "

It dealt with the extent of sewage disposal by septic tanks along the studied coast.
