Invited by the Smithsonian Institute to showcase moladi at the United Nations in New York
2011

Every year, nearly seventy million people, or 200,000 a day, move from rural areas to urban cities. In South Africa alone, more than 2.2 million homes are currently needed, and an additional 180,000 homes will be needed every year to keep pace with rapid urbanization. The Plastic Formwork System is a method of building cast-in-place reinforced concrete structures, in which the walls of a house can be built in as little as a day by unskilled laborers with locally sourced materials and little waste.

Kingston University TEAM presents moladi in the Hult Global Challenge - Habitat for Humanity International - Clinton Foundation

The Kingston University Team have progressed to the FINALS in NY where they will be presenting moladi, a South African innovation, in the Hult Global Challenge as a global solution to their Housing Case Challenge to the Bill Clinton Foundation judges; Bill Clinton, Muhammad Yunus and Michael Treschow. Rachel and her team are one of 6 finalists selected from over a 100 global entrants and we are very proud of them.

The aim of the 2012 Hult Global Case Challenge is to drive solutions around those key social areas, which we believe have the greatest net impact on global poverty. Through collectively overcoming social challenges in education, energy and housing , it is our belief that we are undertaking global poverty on a grass-roots level. Through what has become the world’s largest crowd-sourcing initiative dedicated to solving global social challenges, the Hult Global Case Challenge seeks ideas and solutions from the world’s best and brightest future business leaders that will cause a step-change in the vicious global poverty cycle.

The Hult Global Case Challenge will be held simultaneously around the world through a multi-tiered, international competition platform. Through a call for applicants, teams will be selected to compete at one of five international cities: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai. A sixth site will be facilitated virtually, via Facebook, for those participants whose economic means restrict them from attending one of the five physical competitions.
